I’m going to make this piece short and quick since we all have a lot of last-minute shopping to do. Or how much wrapping is there? Or, in my case, how much baking there is to be done. 

Today’s star is this delectable homemade hot chocolate. The ultimate peppermint hot chocolate, to be exact. When I started trying this recipe, I wanted it to be as thick and creamy as possible. When you order hot chocolate and it’s watery and flavorless, it’s one of the worst feelings in the world. The worst aspect is that it occurs much too often.

The name of the game here is thick and creamy. And it’s tasty. And it’s absolutely incredible. Dark chocolate adds a richness to the taste, while cocoa and cornstarch thicken it wonderfully. The addition of peppermint extract elevates the hot chocolate to new heights.

During the picture shoot, I couldn’t stop drinking it. It takes a great deal of self-control. So just know that if you build this, you’re probably not going to be able to stop yourself from finishing it. But, well, it’s not like that’s a bad thing.

  • 2 1/2 cups milk (whole)
  • 5 oz. chopped dark chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (dutch)
  • brown sugar (two teaspoons)
  • cornstarch, 1 tablespoon
  • vanilla extract (1/2 teaspoon)
  • a quarter teaspoon of peppermint oil
  • To decorate, use whipped cream and crushed peppermint candies (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour milk into a small saucepan and cook for 3 minutes over medium-low heat. Allowing the milk to boil is never a good idea. You just want to heat it to the point where it’s scorching.
  2. Pour in the chocolate, cocoa powder, brown sugar, cornstarch, and both extracts after 3 minutes. Stir every 10 seconds or so with a spatula or whisk. The combination may seem gritty at first, but the color will deepen as the chocolate cools, and everything will come together. Heat for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce is thick and creamy.
  3. Top with whipped cream and crushed peppermint extract in two cups. Serve right away!
