So, what exactly is a mezze plate?

In Cambridge, MA, I used to work in a Middle Eastern bakery. It was my first taste of Middle Eastern cuisine, and I was completely enamored with the delectable tastes and fresh ingredients. My days were spent brewing Turkish coffee, chopping chocolate hazelnut baklava, and soaking revani in syrup. I’d make massive amounts of handmade chai syrup, nibble on scraps of sesame cashew bars, and box up a variety of mezze (dips and spreads) for our take-home case.

I prefer to have the following four groupings on my mezze boards.

  • Fresh Veggies: The radishes, tomatoes, and cucumbers on this mezze board are delicious, but baby carrots, eggplant, or sliced pepper would all be delicious!
  • Pickles or artichokes: I love olives, so I generally eat a lot of them, but pickles or artichokes would also be wonderful.

Ingredients

  • 1 hummus recipe (homemade)
  • 1 muhammara recipe
  • 1 beet tzatziki recipe
  • a half-cup of labneh
  • 1 tiny diced block of feta cheese
  • 6–8 small cucumber sticks, cut
  • 10 quartered tiny radishes
  • 1 grape tomato cup
  • 8 oz. olives (choose your favorite kind!)
  • 8 grape leaves from the shop
  • 4–6 rounds of pita bread
  • fresh herbs, if desired

Instructions

  1. If you’re creating your own dips, follow the recipe’s instructions.
  2. Use a big spoon to place the hummus, muhammara, tzatiziki, and labneh into separate rounds on a wide serving dish, providing negative space in which to nestle your other items. I also prefer to put the feta in this spot since it is a huge ingredient.
  3. Cut your vegetables into slices and put them around the dips.
  4. Place grape leaves or a prepared salad on the mezze board’s readily accessible edges if using grape leaves.
  5. Fill the remaining unfilled spaces with pita bread or crackers. Last but not least, stuff the olives into any leftover gaps.
  6. To give some more flavor, sprinkle with fresh mint, parsley, and cilantro if preferred.
  7. Devour! If your mezze board isn’t finished, cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days!
