The Foodie’s Guide To Israel

This week, I’m visiting Israel and it’s been very interesting trying new dishes. One of the best parts about traveling is getting to try different foods while immersing yourself in a completely foreign culture. It was only recently that I had heard of Israeli food, but now I can’t get enough!

The “foodie meaning” is a person who enjoys eating and cooking. This person is typically knowledgeable about food culture, history, and cuisine. The “Foodie’s Guide To Israel” is an online guide that provides information on the best places to eat in Jerusalem.

I had one of the finest vacations of my life last month with Vibe Israel, a non-profit whose purpose is to improve Israel’s global reputation. I was invited on a week-long trip to Israel with three other influencers, themed on my favorite subject: food.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From Jerusalem’s marketplaces to Tel Aviv’s world-class eateries, I encountered warmth and generosity that made me fall in love with Israel and its people.

This is the first in a three-part series about Israel that I’m working on. In a few weeks, I’ll share more about my personal experience in Israel, but for now, I’m excited to share the truly delicious cuisine I ate during my week overseas.

Whether you’re in Israel for a few days and need a restaurant suggestion or a month and want to see everything, there’s something for everyone. L’chayim!

This magnificent brunch location, regarded as one of Tel Aviv’s finest, is the perfect place to start the most important meal of the day. Everything at Cafe 65 is created to perfection, from the richest, chocolatiest Babka to fresh squeezed juices. The Green Shakshuka is a must-try.


Authentic Israeli pastries may be found at:

Albert Confectionery is a modest, no-frills pastry business in Tel Aviv’s Florentin quarter famed for the finest marzipan in the nation. This family-owned bakery, founded by a Greek immigrant, creates delectable traditional baked products that have been handed down for centuries. To make the most creamy and delectable marzipan, each almond is painstakingly peeled by hand.

Eating at the house of Atalya, a larger-than-life Israeli chef who lives in the Jerusalem hills, was one of my favorite experiences in Israel. Atalya invites private parties to her house for one-of-a-kind dinners that defy tastebud regulations; her cuisine is expertly prepared and brimming with an almost mystical flavor that tastes like more than the sum of its parts. Atalya also organizes seminars in her house where you can learn how to cook some of her favorite recipes and then enjoy them!


Enjoy a meal by the sea at:

Manta Ray is the place to go if you like drinking cappuccinos on a beautiful veranda while gazing out at the ocean. This location is just a few steps away from Tel Aviv’s beautiful beaches. The cuisine is presented in an artistic manner, both aesthetically and technically. Try the Poached Eggs and Croque Monsieur for morning, then sample their vast mezze menu for lunch or supper (selection of dips and spreads common in the Middle East).


Spend the day doing the following:

Wandering the Machane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem is one of the greatest ways to enjoy authentic Israeli food. Local merchants offer meats, cheeses, pastries, veggies, nuts, seeds, and spices there. Not to be missed is the Uzi Eli juice stand, which is run by a third-generation Yemenite healer and sells fresh pressed juices as well as plant-based body care and cosmetics.


Don’t forget to eat at:

Menza is one of those places where you’d dine there every week if you lived in the area. Chef Shlomi Attoun prepares modern cuisine in a relaxing setting that allows the food to shine. The Mediterranean Shrimp were vibrant and distinct, and the Beef Carpaccio was out of this world. To be honest, the carpaccio was one of my favorite three meals in Israel.


Try some Israeli street cuisine in the area:

Shop after shop of genuine Palestinian and Israeli street cuisine is tucked into the small passageways of Old Jerusalem. The streets of Old Jerusalem are guaranteed to satiate a groaning appetite, from freshly cooked falafel to bowls of warm hummus to life-changing Jerusalem Bagels. Abu Shukri boasts some of the best hoomus around.


Satisfy your sweet taste in America at:

Sweet Box in Tel Aviv is the place to go if you’re wanting typical American baked goodies. This teeny-tiny bakery on a back street has the most cheerful atmosphere and is stocked with chocolate chip cookies, warm sticky buns, and freshly baked breads. You’ll have a hard time choosing just one goodie to take home.

Machneyuda is by far the most entertaining restaurant I’ve ever visited. It’s a mix of gourmet and fun. And when you’re wondering to yourself, “Is the meal truly that good?” The answer is an unequivocal YES. Asaf Granit, a celebrity chef, mixes traditional Jerusalem tastes with upmarket meals that, as we unanimously agreed, deserve a Michelin star. Pro tip: the menu varies weekly, but at the conclusion of your dinner, ask for the Dessert Jungle. The cooks spatter crème anglaise, fudge, fruit puree, and five other sweets on your table, which is wrapped in foil. It’s. Completely. Insane.


Purchase groceries (along with a smoothie!) at:

Farma Cultura was another one of my favorite experiences in Israel (so much so that it deserves its own essay). This Pinterest-worthy property is owned by the most charming young Israeli couple and is located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Farma Cultura’s boutique offers produce produced directly out back and specializes in the most delectable vegetable-based smoothies (I adapted their green smoothie recipe in this post). They also hold parties on their beautiful patio, which is ideal for a large party.
