Anthony Bourdain is the subject of this piece. For the time being, we have lost a legend. A guy who defied convention, reinforced the nexus between gastronomy and culture, and left an indelible influence on the food business. His death strikes very near to home for me as someone with an anthropology degree who converted full-time into food blogging. I can’t think of anybody who has influenced me more to keep looking at humanity through the prism of food. Thank you, Chef Bourdain, for your traveling, insatiable curiosity, and for using cuisine to draw attention to the world’s beautiful and diverse cultures.
Tulum was one of the most fascinating sites I’ve ever visited. It’s a mix of tropical, bohemian, affluent, and laid-back. To put it another way, it’s pretty much the ideal vacation spot. It’s also become a foodie’s paradise, with a mix of budget-friendly coastal cafes and upscale multi-course restaurants.
If you’re planning a trip to Tulum, my best advise is to stay near to the main road and ride your bike everywhere. It’s the most effective method to see all Tulum has to offer.

So, without further ado, here’s the Tulum Foodie’s Guide!
It doesn’t seem like Italian pasta and Mexican cuisine should mix together, yet they do. This modest entry leads to a winding route that passes through distinctive guesthouse structures before leading to the beach’s most beautiful restaurant. Fantastic plates complement the décor. The caprese salad, like the pomodoro, was unexpectedly good for being so basic. Grab a bite to eat for lunch, then unwind in one of the restaurant’s oceanfront cabanas for the afternoon.
AT MATCHA MAMA, SIP A MATCHA ON A SWING.
Matcha and hanging swings built on order. Are you up for it? This roadside hut may be the loveliest roadside shack on the planet. It’s also quite gram-worthy.
BY BIKE, EXPLORE THE BEACH ROAD
There is no better way to see Tulum than on a bicycle. By automobile, the beach road may become congested, and with stores strewn along the route for more than 5 miles, riding is the way to go. There are a plethora of businesses selling linen dresses, straw purses, crochet tops, and adorable jewelry.
NOMADE IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR A RELAXED DINNER.
Nomade is the most gorgeous restaurant in Tulum, in my view. Nomade, an expensive bohemian hideaway near the end of the main road, transports you to another era, to a little, beach-side village cut off from the rest of the world. Heaven appears in the shape of gently grilled octopus and elote corn in a land where troubles no longer exist.
Come here for an early supper so you may enjoy the lovely décor in the daytime while also seeing night fall over the breaking waves in front of you.
La Eufemia is the quintessential bohemian taco place in Tulum. Imagine a group of sun-kissed 20-somethings with dreadlocks who are equally fit and carefree.
On a Tuesday, we went to this taco restaurant, and it was full. They served two-for-one margaritas and the greatest tacos we had in Tulum all week. Make a beeline for the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and… more fish tacos.
GITANO IS THE PLACE TO BE ON SATURDAY NIGHT.
Gitano has the feel of a New York City restaurant, but with cactuses climbing the walls and palm palms swinging gracefully in the breeze. We visited over the weekend and were blown away by the cuisine, atmosphere, and design.
I recommend having a late-night supper at the restaurant followed by cocktails in the rear bar. Finish the night outdoors, dancing to calm house music under a canopy of small disco balls.
AT ORIGAMI GELATO, LET A GELATO DRIP ALL OVER YOUR HANDS.
If you’re craving something sweet, go to Origami Gelato. Because ice cream tastes better when you’re racing against the clock and it’s dripping down your hand.
One of my favorite Tulum experiences was the Real Coconut. This oceanfront café, which is part of the Sanara Hotel, was cool, colorful, and peaceful all at the same time. We went for breakfast and had some of their freshly squeezed juices as well as a variety of delectable entrees. The avocado toast was our fave. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity: it was absolutely wonderful!
ANYWHERE, SWIM IN A CENOTE
Cenotes (can I make that a verb?) are a must-see in Tulum. You can’t go wrong with any cenote, but my personal favorite was Casa Cenote, north of town (sadly not featured since I didn’t want to leave my belongings next to a tree while I swam!). It was surrounded by forests, the water was extremely clean, and there were no visitors.
AT MATEO’S, GET YOUR SECOND TACO FIX.
In Tulum, you can’t eat tacos just once. So, for my second taco recommendation, how about Mateo’s? It’s a touch more touristy than La Eufemia, but the cuisine was quite delicious. The guacamole was thick and delicious, the ceviche was basic but tasty, and the fish tacos were cooked to perfection.
RAW LOVE WILL CLEAN YOUR GUT
It was wonderful to have a raw dinner after all of our feasting. The raw pad thai was one of our favorite meals of the trip, and Raw Love filled the mark. Their smoothie bowls were also delicious, so come for breakfast!
