My absolute favorite cookies are these chocolate chip tahini cookies.

To be honest, these chocolate chip tahini cookies are the best cookies I’ve ever baked. EVER.

Which is significant given that my mother prepared cookies so often when I was a kid that my friends dubbed them Katharine Canfield Cookies (or, as my younger sister put it, “Kaffin Canfeeld Cookies”). So, when I say these are the finest cookies I’ve ever had—not just created, but ever had—I mean it. That’s significant.

What Exactly Is Tahini?

“What the heck is Tahini?” some of you may be wondering. “I’m sure I’ve heard of it before, but what exactly is it?” Tahini is the paste made from sesame seeds. Assume you’re making peanut butter, but instead of peanuts, you’re using sesame seeds. Tahini is a common ingredient in Middle Eastern dishes, and you’ve probably eaten it without even realizing it. Tahini is often used in savory dishes like hummus, but it’s also a great addition to sweet pastries!

If you’ve had tahini previously and didn’t like for it, it’s likely that you had terrible tahini (which can occur!). Although good tahini is ultra-creamy and somewhat nutty, the supermarket sells a number of less-than-stellar tahini products. (Bad tahini tastes strangely dry and harsh.)

Why Do Chocolate Chip Cookies Contain Tahini?

The addition of tahini to this simple cookie recipe resulted in a chocolate chip cookie with a nutty flavor. It’s not at all overpowering. Just enough to elicit a “Ooh!” response.

This dish is particularly suitable for individuals who are allergic to peanuts, since tahini is similar to peanut butter.

What Are the Flavors of These Chocolate Chip Tahini Cookies?

I recipe tested these beauties four times to make sure they were great, and they are. They’re ideal.

The texture is really fantastic. The surface is little crunchy, but the inside is deliciously chewy and squishy. The mouth-feel is similar to that of a bakery-style cookie, and you’re left wondering what magic they utilized on these cookies. I can’t get enough of them.

So, savor every last mouthful of these cookies because these are the tastiest chocolate chip tahini cookies on the planet.

  • room temperature 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • a quarter cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 big room-temperature egg
  • 1 tbsp. tahini
  • 1 teaspoon extract de vanille
  • a half teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour (this really helps with the nuttiness*)
  • dark chocolate, 6 oz., roughly chopped (can also use 1 cup chocolate chunks or chips)

  1. Cream butter and both sugars in a standing mixer equipped with a paddle attachment until frothy, approximately 2 minutes. Add the egg and cream and cook for another 2 minutes. 1 minute longer after adding the tahini, vanilla extract, and salt, cream until light and frothy.
  2. Mix in the baking soda and flour until everything is well mixed. Toss in the chopped chocolate and mix well.
  3. Remove the dough from the bowl and cover it in plastic wrap securely. Chill for at least 2 hours, but up to 24 hours in the refrigerator. This step is required for a great, chewy cookie!
  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Place 2 inches between each cookie on cookie sheets after rolling cookie batter into 2 inch balls. Slightly press the cookies down. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are slightly brown. They’ll seem puffy and underbaked at first, but as they cool, they’ll continue to cook. Allow 10 minutes for the biscuit to cool on the baking sheet before moving to a cooling rack.
  5. Serve with a pinch of sea salt on top.
