What is mulled wine, exactly?

Mulled wine isn’t very popular in the United States, although it has a long history in Europe. Mulled wine is historically offered by European street sellers throughout the winter months, according to the Spruce Eats, and is generally served with cookies or biscuits for dipping.

Mulled wine is referred to as vin chaud in France, glogg in Sweden, and Glühwein in Germany. Wassail is a similar drink that I assume the British enjoy as well, but I’m not acquainted with it!

Mulled wine is often a red wine that has been spiced and served warm. The spices and flavorings used vary, although cinnamon and cloves are often used. Citrus, sugar, or fresh ginger may be added to homemade mulled wine, and other liquors can be added for increased warmth and taste.

What is mulled wine and how do you create it?

Although mulled wine is simple to prepare regardless of the recipe, it might take a few hours to bring all of the flavors together. Needless to say, I don’t have that type of patience, therefore I came up with a quick and easy mulled wine recipe (thank you!).

In a sauce pan, bring a bottle of red wine (I like pinot noir), whiskey, sugar, sliced oranges, and a few spices to a boil. Allow the mixture to simmer for five minutes once it has reached a boil, then spoon into cups and enjoy!

If desired, mix all of the ingredients in a slow cooker and simmer on low for a few hours before serving. My favorite method to serve homemade mulled wine is in a slow cooker, particularly if you’re having a big gathering since the wine will remain warm all night. If you go this route, set up a toppings station adjacent to the slow cooker so that visitors may apply the garnishes themselves.

Also, whether or not you filter the mulled wine before serving is entirely up to you. Personally, I don’t mind having particles of spices floating about in my cup, but it’s all up to you!
