Strawberry Nutella French Toast

French toast is the ultimate breakfast on its own, but when you add a layer of nutella and strawberries on top, it becomes decadent. It’s also quick to make in the microwave if you need an even quicker fix!

The “strawberry nutella sandwich” is a dish that combines two of the most delicious breakfast foods: bread and Nutella. The toast can be made with or without eggs, depending on your preference.

My first taste of Nutella was during my sophomore year of high school, when I visited an elephant sanctuary in Thailand. I say “truly ate” since I had a few nibbles before that. In Thailand, on the other hand, I smeared Nutella on toast like it was my job.

I went there on one of those adolescent service trips where you go with the goal of doing meaningful work but end up tagging along with whatever local organization you’re working with and term it “community service.” Don’t get me wrong: elephant sanctuaries and mahouts (elephant trainers) are important, but coupling mahouts with teenagers doesn’t assist the elephants’ condition. But I did got to wash with my elephant in a river, so there’s that. 

Anyways. Let’s go back to Nutella. So we had a couple overnight expeditions when we’d load up our elephants with camping gear, food, and water, then ride them into the bush. It was awe-inspiring. We’d eat white bread covered with Nutella when we felt hungry.

Someone saved a bag of bread and a large jar of Nutella for us to eat for breakfast, lunch, and supper. No one objected.


So I made strawberry Nutella French toast today. You may call it nutritious since the eggs provide decent protein, and the Nutella provides beneficial fat and fiber.

Right? Right.

Choosing the Best French Toast Bread

The bread is the foundation of any fantastic French toast. Sure, standard sandwich bread will suffice, but if you want to go the additional mile, use a soft, somewhat sweet bread. You want breads that don’t come pre-sliced (you want to cut your own big pieces!) and keep their form when coated in the delightful egg mixture.

Personally, I like a delicious filled Brioche French toast. Brioche absorbs the egg mixture well and has a buttery, creamy taste. Challah, a buttery and pillowy counterpart to brioche, is an excellent substitute.

If none of those breads are available at your grocery store, use a decent quality white sandwich bread (the bakery department should have some that would work!). Pick a white bread that isn’t too fragile, such as Wonder Bread.



  • 2 big room-temperature eggs
  • 1/3 gallon of whole milk
  • 14 cup heavy cream
  • salt (1/4 teaspoon)
  • 1 teaspoon extract de vanille
  • 4 thick brioche or equivalent soft bread slices
  • a quarter cup of nutella
  • 1/2 cup finely cut strawberries


  1. 2 tablespoons butter on a big pan or griddle over medium low heat.
  2. Half of the nutella should be spread over a piece of bread, leaving a 1/4 to 1/2 inch border. Strawberries should be strewn on top. With the second piece of bread, make a sandwich. Rep with the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Combine the eggs, milk, cream, salt, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Coat each sandwich completely in the egg mixture. Cook for 4 minutes on each side, or until light golden brown on both sides. Serve immediately with maple syrup and powdered sugar.
