What is red velvet cake, and how do you make it?

Red velvet cake is a “mild” chocolate cake, in my opinion. It isn’t vanilla, but it isn’t chocolate either. That may not seem appetizing, but it’s the most perfectly balanced, silky soft cake you’ll ever taste! Red velvet cake, made with a hearty amount of red food coloring to make things colorful and festive, is a class dessert that belongs alongside vanilla and carrot cake.

Red Velvet Cake Ingredients

Homemade cakes aren’t as easy to make as cookies, but this one doesn’t need any special ingredients. You most likely already have all of them in your pantry!

  • There’s no need for cake flour in this recipe! A soft and velvety crumb may be made using regular all-purpose flour.
  • Cocoa powder: A little amount of cocoa powder is all you’ll need to get that ideal touch of chocolate taste.
  • Baking soda: Baking soda will work well as a leavener in this cake! The buttermilk and vinegar give it a little additional oomph to help it rise to perfection.
  • Vegetable oil: We generally use a mix of oil and butter to bake our cakes, but when it comes to velvet cakes, oil produces the silkiest texture!
  • Sugar granules: Sugar granules will properly sweeten your cake!
  • To ensure that your eggs blend easily into the batter, make sure they are at room temperature. To get that ideal cakey, but fudgy crumb, you’ll need four big eggs.
  • Vanilla extract is a must-have ingredient. After all, this is a chocolaty vanilla cake, so you’ll need plenty of pure vanilla essence.
  • Vinegar: I know vinegar isn’t generally seen on a homemade cake ingredient list, but it will give your cake a little additional tang for that ideal southern red velvet cake.
  • You can always create your own buttermilk if you don’t have any on hand. Here’s a link to our homemade buttermilk recipe.
  • Red food coloring is required for the creation of red velvet cake. We used gel food coloring, but you may use whatever you have on hand and modify the amounts as needed.

Red Velvet Cake Suggestions

Although making a cake from scratch might be scary, this recipe is simple to follow. If you follow these four simple steps, you’ll have a delicate red velvet cake in no time!

  • Sift the dry ingredients: I’m not a sifter by nature. I’m not a big fan of it, but it’s a necessity when it comes to handmade cake. It’s critical to evenly spread your leavening agent and ensure that no clumps of flour remain in your dry ingredients if you want a smooth and velvety crumb!
  • Don’t overbake: A dry cake is the last thing you want. When a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mainly clean and the cakes are just beginning to bounce back, remove them from the oven. Remember that your cakes will continue to bake as they cool, so having them slightly underdone is preferable than having them overdone.
  • Don’t forget the cream cheese icing: The frosting is equally as important as the cake in a classic red velvet cake. It’s just not right to eat red velvet cake with anything other than dream cream cheese frosting.
  • Use a crumb coat: Because the red velvet cake is so brightly colored, we suggest applying a crumb coat to keep any annoying red crumbs out of your pristine white cream cheese frosting!

1636281830_3_Red-Velvet-Cake How big would the cakes be if you use this recipe?

Red velvet cake comes in a variety of forms and sizes. As written, the recipe yields:

  • 1 9-inch-by-13-inch sheet cake: Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the cake for 35 minutes. When a toothpick put into the middle comes out mainly clean and bounces back to the touch, you know it’s done.
  • 2 rounds (8 or 9 inches): If you follow the steps exactly, you’ll get a cake that looks just like the one shown!
  • 3 6 inch rounds: Divide the mixture equally among three 6 inch cake circles and bake for 25 minutes or so!
  • Cupcakes: 28 To create cupcakes, use a big cookie scoop or a 1/3 cup measurement! Cook for 17 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out largely clean!

We hope you appreciate this recipe for red velvet cake as much as we do!
