Purple Plum Cake

This is the classic German plum cake. It can be topped with either a light, fluffy frosting or one of the more traditional icings. Some people like to top it off with raspberry sauce and cream, but that’s optional!

The “smitten kitchen plum cake” is a recipe for a traditional American plum cake. The cake is made with flour, eggs, egg yolks and sugar, butter or vegetable oil, baking powder, lemon zest and vanilla extract.

I, Sarah Fennel, resigned from my work on September 8, 2014.

Regardless of the reasons, I believe it will be one of the finest choices I ever make. And, you could wonder, what am I doing? Freelance photography (hit me up, Michigan! ), a smidgeon of yoga, and a lot of full-time job.

Yes, that came from from the horse’s mouth. It’s a fact. Please inform everyone you know. (Perhaps not everyone.) It’s not like the Whole Foods cashier is going to notice. She should, though.) As you can see, I’ve been working on this cool new site for the last two days. I still have more work to do, but I’m so happy to show you guys that I couldn’t wait another day.

In other news, I’ve moved out of my dingy third-floor flat and into a lovely downtown loft with the BF. Exposed brick, a skylight, and, most crucially, a dishwasher are all features of our kitchen. I’m joyfully drowning my camera and myself in flour while he’s busy with medical school.

So what better way to start Broma 5.0 than with this Purple Plum Cake (since I’ve already apologized to my blog here, here, and here). It’s the nicest cake she’s ever posted on her blog, according to Amelia P. Morris of Bon Appétempt. “The batter is so easy that you could have reasonable reservations about the brilliance of this cake,” writes Smitten Kitchen. Between 1983 and 1995, it was published every year in the New York Times. So I had no choice but to put it to the test. And, oh, is it delectable.

There’s something to be said about combining sweet and sour flavors. The plums I bought at the farmer’s market this morning were not luscious and ripe, but I believe it added to the cake’s charm since their tartness provides a lovely counterpoint to the cake’s simple sweetness. And the lemon adds a touch of acidity that is good for just about everything. It’s near-perfection.

So that’s where I’m at, and I can’t wait to get started. “Here we go-ho-ho!” said our family friends’ toddler Cole.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (125 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (5 g)
  • a generous teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 grams) + 1 to 2 tablespoons
  • softened 1/2 cup unsalted butter (115 grams or 8 tablespoons)
  • 2 eggs, big
  • 12 tiny purple flowers halved and pitted Italian purple plums (I used 6 larger ones)
  • 2 tblsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium mixing basin, sift or whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until creamy and light in color in a larger mixing dish. Add the eggs one at a time, scraping down the bowl after each addition, then the dry ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
  2. Smooth the batter into a 9-inch springform pan that hasn’t been oiled (although if you’re afraid, you can always gently coat it with butter or nonstick spray beforehand). Place the plums, skin side up, on top of the batter and cover it completely. Lemon juice, cinnamon, and the remaining sugar are sprinkled on top.
  3. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clear of batter (but not plum juice). Allow to cool on a rack.
