2 3/4 cup flour (all-purpose) 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 packet instant yeast, 1/4 teaspoon a half teaspoon of salt 1/3 gallon of whole milk 4 tblsp butter (unsalted) 1 cup of water 1 1/2 tablespoons extract de vanille 2 big room-temperature eggs

1/2 cup sugar (granulated)

3 lemons, zest

2 ounces unsalted butter, melted 1 orange zest

To make the icing: 

a third of a cup of powdered sugar 3 oz. softened cream cheese 1 tablespoon milk (whole) 1 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed

Using a rubber spatula, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a medium mixing basin. In the meanwhile, heat the milk and butter together until the butter is completely melted. Then stir in the vanilla extract and the water until the mixture is lukewarm. Fill the dry ingredients with the heated milk/butter combination. Mix the dough on low speed while adding the eggs one at a time, using a mixer with a paddle attachment. Stop the mixer, add 1/2 cup of the remaining flour, and mix for another 30 seconds on low speed. Mix for another 30-45 seconds after adding two more teaspoons of flour. The dough will be rather sticky at this stage, but don’t worry!

Dust a work surface with with flour and knead the dough gently until it is no longer sticky. Add another 1-2 teaspoons of flour if necessary. Cover the dough with plastic wrap in a large mixing basin. Allow dough to rise in a warm, dry area for 45-60 minutes, or until about doubled in size. When you poke the dough, it’s ready, and your finger print remains indented.

Meanwhile, combine the lemon and orange zest with the sugar in a small dish. Remove from the equation.

Pat the dough down and roll it out into a 20′′x12′′ rectangle after it has risen (do measure this out, because it is important for all your dough pieces to be the same size). If your dough is uneven, create a precise rectangle using a pizza cutter. Make careful to use all of the melted butter (put aside for the filling) on the dough! Then, evenly sprinkle the sugar mixture over the dough and work it in with your fingers. The dough should then be sliced into five equal 4′′x12′′ strips. Place each strip on top of the others, resulting in five stacked 4′′x12′′ strips. Make six 2′′x4′′ rectangles out of the strips. 

Place the rectangles in the dough pan so that they stand side by side with the cut end facing up. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-50 minutes. 

In a greased 9′′x5′′ bread pan, bake the loaf for 40 minutes at 350°F, or until golden brown on top. Transfer to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes after baking.

Combine the cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, lemon juice, and milk until smooth in consistency while the loaf is baking. Fill up the crevices with icing and pour over the heated bread. Mangia!
