What exactly is halva?

Guys, I’m sorry.

If you’ve never tried halva before, you must try it. Halva is a Middle Eastern confection made with sesame paste and sugar that has been heated. It has a nutty vanilla flavor, a creamy but crumbly texture, and is usually packaged in a one-pound block from which you may take bites. You already know how much I love tahini, and halva is simply sweetened tahini. In my opinion, this is a victory.

And we’ve just found that halva is not only great on its own, but it’s also incredible in brownies. The sweet, sesame taste of the halva nicely complements the fudgy, extremely chocolaty richness of the brownies. This is a match made in heaven.

We had a large block of halva in the pantry that was about to go bad, and nothing irritates me more than wasting food. Especially difficult-to-find luxury Middle Eastern sweets. So Sofi and I sat down and brainstormed ideas for what we might do with this nutty sesame treat. We ate our sweets in large portions as a “brainstorming session” before moving on to these halva swirled brownies.

Remember those incredible brownies we spoke about a few weeks ago? In other words, the finest brownies ever. It’s like, ever. We’d made them at least three times in the previous two weeks, but we knew we had to make them again. With a halva swirl this time.

What is the best way to bake using halva?

While I prefer eating halva as is, if you have a big supply on hand, baking with it is a lot of fun! Cut into bits and incorporated into cookie dough, swirled through quick breads, or used in a handmade candy bar, it would be delicious. This is our first time using it in the kitchen, but we’ll keep you updated the next time we use it! Vanilla halva cinnamon buns are dancing in my head. Is there anybody else interested in that?

Ingredients

  • Halva (8 oz.) (If you can’t locate it in your local grocery shop, you can get it from Amazon!)
  • three tbsp. water
  • There is just one recipe for the Best Brownies Ever.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Follow the directions to make the Best Brownies Ever. Set aside the batter in the 9 × 9 pan that has been prepared.
  2. Melt the halva and water together in a saucepan over medium heat until runny and blended. The halva mixture should be around the same thickness as the brownie batter. If you need to add another tablespoon of water, go ahead and do so. You want to be able to swirl the halva effortlessly.
  3. Place huge globs of halva on top of the brownies and swirl the batter and halva together with a butter knife. Make sure you don’t overmix! You want certain halva and brownie layers to marble, but they should be distinct. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the brownies for 40-50 minutes. This is entirely dependent on your oven, so check the brownies after 40 minutes to see whether they’re done. When the edges are firm to the touch and a knife put into the center comes out mainly clean, you know they’re done. Remember that the brownies will continue to bake after they’ve been removed from the oven, so it’s OK if they’re a little gooey in the centre!
  4. Allow time for the dish to cool before serving. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a crunchier finish!
