Ingredients for Gluten-Free Vegan Cinnamon Rolls

You’ll need the following items to prepare these delectable morning treats! Nothing out of the ordinary, but we broke it down for you so you can get to the shop quickly.

  • Yeast: Use active yeast that rises quickly.
  • Non-dairy Milk: In this recipe, we used unsweetened almond milk, but any unsweetened non-dairy milk would suffice! To avoid killing the yeast, make sure your milk is warm before using it.
  • Miyoko’s vegan butter is fantastic for baking! Depending on what you can find in your local grocery shop, you might also use Earth Balance or a similar brand!
  • Sugar: Duh. For a little additional sweetness in the dough, we added granulated sugar, and brown sugar for the classic cinnamon sugar swirl filling!
  • Bob’s Gluten Free Cup for Cup Flour is our #1 recommendation for gluten-free flour. It’s the greatest gluten-free mix I’ve ever used, and I can’t say enough good things about it. This isn’t a paid advertisement; it’s just the truth.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon rolls, of course, will need ground cinnamon. When in doubt, more is always better. Everyone will forget they are gluten-free and plant-based if you smother them with cinnamon sugar.

For Christmas, I cooked these gooey vegan cinnamon buns, which were devoured in a matter of seconds. These cinnamon buns will appeal to vegans, butter lovers, gluten eaters, and gluten-free infants alike. This, in my view, is a hallmark of a decent gluten-free/vegan option.

Vegan Cinnamon Rolls with Gluten-Free Tips

  • Don’t hurry the process: I’m sorry to tell you this, but cinnamon buns take time to make. Yes, rules may be violated from time to time (see: 1 hour chocolate cinnamon buns), but this is not one of them. To get as much fluffy air into these rolls as possible, you’ll need two separate 1 hour rises.
  • Keep the dough thick: Do not overwork the dough once it has risen. Stretch it out into a 9 x 13 rectangle on a floured surface. You’ll want to preserve the dough’s rise and mass while rolling out these cinnamon rolls; otherwise, your dough will crack and shrivel up once it’s in the oven!
  • Don’t overbake: If you’ve done any gluten-free baking, you’ll know how easy it is for gluten-free treats to dry out. They might become dry, thick, and unappealing as a result. Because gluten-free flour and vegan butter don’t brown as toastily as standard flour and butter, you’ll want to remove the cinnamon rolls before they begin to brown. This guarantees a gooey center!

Vegan Cinnamon Rolls: How to Store Them

The best way to eat these gluten-free vegan cinnamon rolls is right out of the oven, but if you must preserve any, store them in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To restore them back to their “fresh out of the oven” gooey glory, we suggest warming them before eating. Simply reheat the cinnamon rolls in the oven for 10 minutes or in the microwave for 45 seconds.

Ingredients

To make the Cinnamon Rolls, combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

  • 1 active dry fast rise yeast package
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk, warmed
  • 3 tbsp. sugar (granulated)
  • 1/4 cup melted vegan butter
  • salt (1/4 teaspoon)
  • 2 1/2 cups gluten-free baking flour (1:1 ratio) (we prefer Bob’s 1:1 Baking Flour)

To Make the Filling

  • brown sugar, 1/3 cup
  • 2 tblsp cinnamon (ground)
  • 4 tablespoons room temperature vegan butter

To make the vegan cream cheese frosting, combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl.

  • a half-cup of powdered sugar
  • vegan cream cheese, 2 tblsp.
  • 2 tbsp vegan butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon extract of vanilla
  • a sprinkle of salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. dairy-free milk

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer equipped with the dough hook, combine the milk, sugar, and yeast. Allow for a 5-minute rest period. The yeast should froth, indicating that it is active.
  2. Combine the melted butter, 1 cup gluten-free flour, and the salt in a mixing bowl. Mix until everything is well blended. Mix in the remaining flour until the dough comes together and forms a ball. Knead the dough for 15 minutes on a heavily floured surface, or until it is largely smooth.
  3. Coat a large mixing bowl with oil and add the dough. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm place for 1 hour to proof.
  4. To make the filling, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small basin. Grease a 9-inch circular baking pan lightly. Set one aside and the other aside.
  5. Examine the dough after 1 hour. It is recommended that the dough be twice in size. Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a floured work surface. Make a 9 × 13-inch rectangle out of the dough. It will be a thick dough. This is exactly what you’re looking for. Spread the melted butter evenly over the dough, all the way to the edges. Sprinkle the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture over the butter and massage it in to blend.
  6. Roll the dough into a log starting at one end and squeezing the ends together to keep it together. Cut the dough into 8 equal buns with a serrated knife or dental floss (even better!). Place in the pan that has been prepared.
  7. Allow the dough to rise again. Cover the pan with a towel and set aside for 1 hour to rest.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the cinnamon buns for 20-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  9. Make the cream cheese icing while the cinnamon buns are baking. In a mixing basin, whisk together all of the frosting ingredients until smooth.
  10. Allow 10 minutes for the cinnamon rolls to cool once they have been removed from the oven. To thin down the frosting, microwave it for 10-15 seconds, then spread it over warm cinnamon buns and enjoy!

*We used Miyokos for the vegan cream cheese! Daiya or Kite Hill might also be used, however we found Miyokos to be the most consistent.
