What is the definition of a french toast bake?

French toast is one of my favorite breakfast foods, but it may be time consuming to prepare. Each item is dipped in batter then pan-fried to perfection… If you’re feeding a large group, timing is crucial. I usually get the impression that someone is left with a chilly piece. Why settle for cold french toast when you can bake everything at once? Everyone gets a freshly cooked, fresh-from-the-oven piece of french toast, and it’s a lot less labor. A french toast bake is cooked in the same manner as ordinary french toast, with the exception that after soaking the slices, they are placed in a greased pan and baked. There will be no splattered cooking pans or sticky fingers.

Sold? That’s what I assumed.

Ingredients

  • 1 challah or brioche loaf
  • 4 big room-temperature eggs
  • 1 gallon of milk
  • a quarter cup of maple syrup
  • 2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tbsp extract de vanille
  • salt (1/4 teaspoon)
  • 2 medium apples, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped almonds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Using parchment paper, line a standard-sized loaf pan. Remove from the equation.
  2. Bread should be cut into one-inch thick pieces. Remove from the equation.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt in a large mixing dish. Soak all of the bread pieces for 5 minutes in the egg mixture.
  4. Slice your apples horizontally into thin rings in the meanwhile. To remove the apple core from the slices, use a corer or a metal frosting tip.
  5. Alternate one piece of bread with three slices of apples as you layer your wet bread slices and apples. If you have any egg mixture left over after you’ve finished, pour it over the whole loaf. Cover loosely with tin foil and sprinkle with chopped almonds.
  6. Remove the tin foil after 30 minutes and bake for 45-50 minutes. Allow 10 minutes to cool before dusting with powdered sugar!
  7. To serve, cut pieces from the loaf using a bread knife. Drizzle maple syrup on top!
