  • 6 apples, big (3 granny smith, 3 sweeter variety)
  • a quarter cup of light brown sugar
  • a quarter cup of granulated sugar
  • corn starch, 3 tblsp
  • 1 tblsp. cinnamon powder

  • 1/8 teaspoon clove powder
  • a quarter teaspoon of salt

  • a third of a cup of butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 1/3 cup oats, old fashioned
  • a half cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (light)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (granulated)
  • salt (1/4 teaspoon)
  • 1 tblsp. cinnamon powder


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and butter a 9 × 13-inch baking pan. Remove the pan from the heat.
  2. Combine the sugars, cornstarch, spices, and salt in a large mixing basin.
  3. Before slicing the apples into small 1/8 – 1/4′′ pieces, peel and core them. Toss the apples with the sugar mixture to incorporate. This can be done using two large wooden spoons, but I like to do it with my hands. Arrange the apples in an equal layer in the greased dish. Remove from the equation.
  4. Combine the oats, flour, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a medium mixing basin. Cut the butter into the mixture with a pastry cutter, a fork, or your fingertips until it resembles wet sand and clumps together. Over the apples, evenly distribute the mixture.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes at 375°F before lowering the heat to 350°F and continuing to bake for another 35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple layer is bubbling. Allow time for the food to cool before eating. Serving with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream is recommended.

Three granny smith apples are used to ensure that you have some robust, tarter cooking apples to balance out three pleasant, sweeter apples. Feel free to use whichever fruits and vegetables you have on hand (McIntosh, Pink Lady, Envy, Gala, Braeburn, Honey Crisp, and so on).
