This drink has been around since at least 1891 and was even mentioned in a Dr Seuss book– but it didn’t take off until after World War II. Today it remains one of America’s favorite drinks to this day!

My milkshake talents are top-notch, thanks to four years of working in an ice cream shop. It’s simple to stack three scoop ice cream cones. My forearms are as strong as an orangutan’s (because as any biological anthro major knows, they hang on branches by their arms). And, like it’s my job, I can eyeball the exact quantity of milk required in a frappe (as we Bostonians call them). That was the case, so… sure. 

In the summer, milkshakes are one of my favorite snacks. They’re tasty and easy to transport. Plus, there isn’t a poor milkshake taste. So, instead of paying $8 on a milkshake from the hipster ice cream store down the street, make your own at home. After all, what could be better than a delicious handcrafted milkshake to treat oneself after a hard day?

I used Tate+Lyle® Gourmet Beverage Syrups, a combination of pure cane sugar and caramel flavor, to create the right caramel taste. Tate +Lyle® Gourmet Beverage Syrups are available in a number of flavors, including hazelnut and vanilla (ideal for my morning coffee, right?). But I knew precisely what I wanted to do as soon as I heard about the caramel syrup.

Instructions for making the greatest milkshake

To make a milkshake, just combine all of the ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you want to create the greatest homemade milkshake you’ve ever had.

Create a homemade caramel milkshake using whole milk – If you’re going to make a homemade caramel milkshake, you have to go all out. For the richest, creamiest milkshake, use full milk. If whole milk is too much for you, try for 2 percent instead.

Buy genuine ice cream – sorry, but the low-fat ice cream you’ll find at the supermarket isn’t actual ice cream. Make sure you’re getting the good stuff by reading the ingredients label on your pint of ice cream. The key components should be milk, cream, and sugar, with no nasties like thickeners or stabilizers in sight.

Drizzle caramel sauce inside the glass — This step is completely optional, but it will definitely wow the person for whom you’re creating the milkshake. Pour the caramel milkshake into the glass after drizzling a little caramel sauce down the edges. Your handmade milkshake will appear very professional with the caramel down the edges.

If you really wanted to go all out, you could even incorporate salt into your caramel for a salted caramel milkshake. It’ll need around a quarter teaspoon. Because the only thing I like to caramel is salted caramel.

Ingredients

  • 1 pint ice cream (vanilla)
  • 3/4 gallon of whole milk
  • Tate + Lyle® Caramel Pure Cane Syrup, 3 tblsp
  • toppings (optional):
  • caramel
  • cream whipped
  • sprinkles of rainbow

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the insides of mason jars. Remove from the equation.
  2. Blend vanilla ice cream, whole milk, and Tate + Lyle® Caramel Pure Cane Syrup until smooth in a large blender.
  3. Fill mason jars halfway with caramel, then top with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles.
