1. Get Rid of Distractions
First and foremost. You must avoid any big distractions if you want to remain focused when working from home. Distractions are what hinder you from concentrating on your task, and as we’ve all learned the hard way, distractions are, well, pretty distracting. So, in order to enter into that inspired attitude right away, you must remove those distractions. Do you find yourself scrolling through Instagram on a regular basis? Place the phone in a different room. Do you go on Facebook every 5 minutes to see what’s new? Download a program that allows you to block certain websites from your computer for a defined amount of hours each day.
2. Collaborate with musicians
Working while listening to music is a fantastic way to stay motivated. Working with music, at least for me, drowns out any internal noise and virtually transports me to a contemplative state. It gives you quick clarity. Instrumental and beat-heavy music works best for me (some of my favorite Spotify playlists are here and here), but it’s crucial to listen to whatever gets you in the zone. So put on your headphones, crank up your favorite tunes, and get to work.
3. Alternate between tedious and enjoyable tasks.
Unfortunately, no work is all sunny and rainbows; even the finest occupations have their share of annoyances. Accounting and email responses are two of those chores for me. Don’t get me wrong: they’re essential, but they’re not my favorite. So, in order to keep motivated, I try to alternate unpleasant duties with enjoyable ones, such as shooting something I’ve been thrilled about or writing a fantastic new piece. You get your brain into work mode by beginning with something enjoyable, so by the time you have to tackle that awful activity, you’re kinetically on a roll. And after you’ve completed that vexing duty, you’ve got something else to look forward to!
4. Set small, attainable goals
Big ideas are excellent, but if you don’t break them down into smaller, more manageable objectives, it’s easy to lose sight of your overall aim. I like creating mini-goals for myself since each one is a triumph in and of itself. When you’re able to create goals for yourself, you’ll feel lot more accomplished and motivated to keep going. If you make a to-do list, you’ll get bonus points. Maybe it’s just me, but ticking things off a list feels great!
5. Take frequent breaks
Take a lot of pauses, that’s my holy grail of becoming a self-starter. Our brains don’t do well when they’re continually put to work; they need time to rest and digest. So I’ll usually work for an hour or so, then take a 5-minute break to play with Tilly, make a cup of coffee, or have a snack. For a little while, my brain can relax, and when those five minutes are over, I feel much more prepared to return to my job than if I had pushed through with declining energy and drive.
6. Reframe Difficult Tasks
Building on #3, rethinking how you think about specific jobs might sometimes help you be more motivated to do them. As I already said, I despise accounting. It just irritates me. However, one way I’ve begun to reframe accounting is to think of it as a means for me to assess how well I’ve been doing over the previous month or so. Instead of thinking to myself, “oh, I have to create six invoices,” I tell myself, “If I finish all of my invoices, I’ll be able to know what my earnings were for the month!” Rewiring your brain to conceive about unpleasant things in a different manner makes them far more tolerable and helps you get through them.
7. Give yourself a reward
This is the adult equivalent of “if you complete your veggies, you can have dessert.” Because, let’s face it, we all have to treat ourselves like small kids from time to time. So I want to thank myself for the things I achieve because it motivates me to keep going with my efforts. If I’m feeling especially uninspired, for example, I remind myself, “If you can write this piece in an hour, you can go watch an episode of that TV program you love.” And, believe me, it works 11 times out of ten.
8. Increase Your Heart Rate (especially in the morning)
Although I am not a morning person, I must admit that pushing myself to work out in the morning has really aided my motivation for the rest of the day. My thinking feels slow and sleepy on days when I don’t work out in the morning. And on such days, it seems like it’s twice as easy. So, whether it’s 50 jumping jacks or a full-on HIIT workout, I strongly advise you to do anything to get your heart rate up first thing in the morning.
9. Make a day-by-day game plan.
Starting the day with a game plan is a terrific way to stay motivated and plan out your day. You have a predetermined amount of chores to perform for the day, and you know precisely what you need to do and how to execute them. It definitely helps me to speak about what I need to do for the day if I’m feeling overwhelmed or aimless. Even if it’s little activities like “update calendar” or “install image compressor,” establishing a list and ticking them off will make you feel like you’re getting things done and moving ahead. By the end of the day, you’ll have a clear picture of what you accomplished (or didn’t!) and a game plan for the following day.
