I had the amazing chance to join Windstar Cruises on one of their James Beard culinary cruises this summer. From Lisbon to Dublin, we spent our days going from port to port and eating our way across.
It was my first time cruising, and I had a blast. Here are 7 reasons why you should go on a food cruise right now, from the scenery to the cities.
The meal was fantastic. There was not just a James Beard guest chef on board, but there were also chances to experience local food on and off the ship every day.
We went on an Asturian cider tour one day, where we sampled local cider and ate Spanish croquettes, tortilla espaola, and a variety of cheeses.
Another day, we went to a French oyster farm off the Atlantic coast. We took turns trying his famed mollusks after hearing from an 83-year-old oyster farmer that eating 12 oysters a day is the secret to life.
Both of these trips were provided free of charge to everyone on board, allowing us to see and do things we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.
Wake up on the Gironde one morning and in La Rochelle the next. One of my favorite aspects of the trip was being able to see so many destinations without having to deal with the hassles of travel.
Traveling is my favorite pastime, but I’d be lying if I claimed I didn’t dread the time spent traveling. Planes, trains, and lines that never seem to stop.
However, with Windstar, there was no need to be concerned about getting between cities. The yacht served as both a home and a source of mobility for us. My clothing were kept in one closet, and my bed was kept to myself. It was the best of all worlds: I had a home base while still being able to visit a new place every day.
Onboard, the atmosphere was laid-back and easygoing. The ship itself was lovely, with numerous decks and relaxing areas. We spent our free time renting movies from the lounge, getting massages, and relaxing in the hot tub.
Despite this, we feasted like kings. Breakfast croissants, lunch a massive salad bar, and supper local sea fish. We were able to have drinks from the ship’s bar anytime we wished. Desserts include cookies and cakes. The list could go on and on.
I like eating delicious meals when I travel. But I’m not always in the mood to get dressed up to obtain it. Dinners on white linen are great, but they become old after a time. We were able to live a carefree lifestyle while still enjoying absolutely great cuisine thanks to Windstar.
Maybe it’s the anthropologist in me, but simply wandering around a strange city gives me a natural high. Smelling the street cuisine, seeing how the natives spend their days, and just wandering for kilometers.
Each day was spent in a different location, from the cobbled streets of Lisbon to the impeccably groomed parks of Bordeaux, allowing us to visit various cities and nations in a short length of time.
It might be exhausting to eat the same thing every day. However, our vacation with Windstar was basically a cultural tasting menu.
In Spain, we ate tapas, in Bordeaux, macarons, and in Cancale, oysters. We sipped local wines and tried a variety of cheeses. We ate our way through the vacation, literally.
It was also fantastic to have a variety of cuisine on board and off. We got room service most mornings before venturing out during the afternoon. We’d go from café to cafe, bouncing from bakery to bakery, to see what the city has to offer that day. We’d have supper in one of the boat’s two dining halls later that night. The diversity was outstanding.
There was no need to spend days researching before our vacation. Every night, a page would be slid under the door, with the essential information for the next day’s port.
You may either spend the day on your own or join a Windstar-led tour. We went on a solo stroll in Bordeaux one day and a group excursion to Mont Saint Michel the next.
We went to the concierge when we had a query regarding a port. We went on a Windstar expedition when we needed some direction. We were never perplexed or ill-prepared for the day ahead.
Please tell me where else you can take a daily wine lesson, travel to six locations, eat yourself on buffets, and sleep in the same bed every night.
Almost everything was bundled with Windstar. We enjoyed room service anytime we wanted it, were able to participate in many free excursions, and practically every supper included wine pairings. On a boat, it was like vacationing at an all-inclusive resort.
Our experience with Windstar was unrivaled. The staff was really kind, the facilities were stunning, and we were able to immerse ourselves in the cultures of many nations in less than two weeks.
Windstar is the place to go if you want to enjoy a unique and rich cultural experience with a strong emphasis on gastronomy. It was an incredible experience, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
