1. Be a Human Being

This is our number one recommendation for a reason! People don’t want to feel like they’re reading a bulk email from a machine. Take a few moments at the start of your email to identify yourself, saying who you are, what you do, and why you are contacting them. It’s helpful to give a face to a name, therefore connecting your blog and/or most popular social media channel is a necessity!

2. Pay Them a Compliment (and make it sincere!)

It’s critical to inform anybody you’re contacting about your personal relationship with them. Compliments like “I’ve been using your X for years” or “You’re my go-to X” are fantastic. This demonstrates that you aren’t just copying and pasting a bulk email and communicates a genuine relationship.

3. Keep it brief

People are preoccupied. They refuse to read a book. Any pitch email should be no more than 200 words long!

4. Double-check your work.

Always, always, always proofread before sending. Because you only have one opportunity to create a first impression, a mistake in your first email demonstrates a lack of professionalism. Also, double-check that your contact’s name is spelled correctly. It’s a big no-no to misspell someone’s name.

5. Demonstrate Value

Consider why you are qualified for the position you are pitching before writing your email. Asking yourself, “Why would I be excellent at this?” is a wonderful exercise, and then explaining why in your pitch email. Explain why you are the best applicant for the position.

6. Be Straight to the Point

Asking for what you want up front isn’t overly forward. At the conclusion of your pitch email, don’t be hesitant to ask for their business, propose a phone call to discuss further, or mention a particular idea you have for collaborating. “Let me know if you’re interested!” at the conclusion of an email is much too open-ended to elicit a response. Including a straight request demonstrates that you are serious about collaborating and are ready to get to work!
